Identifying the Severity of Scratches
Before you start, you should understand the different types of scratches:
- Clear Coat Scratches: These are superficial and only affect the outermost layer of your car’s paint.
- Base Coat Scratches: These penetrate the clear coat and affect the color layer.
- Primer Scratches: These are deeper, reaching the primer layer.
- Deep Scratches: These go through all paint layers down to the metal.
Removing Light Scratches

For minor clear coat scratches, you can often restore your car’s finish with these steps:

Removing Dents

- Plunger Method: For small to medium-sized dents, use a plunger. Wet the plunger and the dent, then press and pull as you would to unclog a drain. The suction can help pop the dent back into place.
- Boiling Water Technique: For plastic bumpers, pour boiling water over the dented area to make the plastic more flexible. Reach behind the bumper and push the dent out. Pour cold water over the area to set the plastic back into place.
- Hair Dryer and Compressed Air: Heat the dented area with a hair dryer for about 30 seconds, then spray it with a can of compressed air held upside down. The rapid cooling can cause the dent to pop out.
